Who I Am

Aanii, I am a young indigenous entrepreneur from Neyaashiinigmiing, located in the Bruce Peninsula. In 2020 I graduated from St. Andrew’s College, in Aurora. I attended that high school from Grades 9-12, where I learned many important values and made life-long relationships. Currently, I just graduated from Michigan State University with a degree in Communication Leadership & Strategy. After learning various skills from schooling I have been applying them to my business. Outside of flying drones, I love to play recreational sports like football and basketball. I also like to do CrossFit here and there.

My Story

In the fall of 2020, while learning online I knew that I had wanted to run a business. I was not sure of what I wanted to do, but I knew I wanted to do something. One day I had gone for a long walk with my dad, and we discussed many things including my interest in drones. From this conversation, I concluded that a drone business capturing photography/videography of our beautiful scenery could be supported by the tourism market in the Saugeen Peninsula. Since that conversation, this idea drove me to explore the possibilities.

A month later I had put together a business plan to apply for start-up funding from the Chippewas of Nawash First Nation. In my plan, I articulated that I would receive training, get licensed, create a website, and then launch my business by reaching out to local organizations like the Bruce Peninsula National Park.

In the spring of 2021, I lived on campus at MSU, focusing on school and building important relationships with my peers. It was while at school I was notified of my award from the Nawash Small Business Grant Program. I took this award as full support from the Chief and Council of my band. I then continued to carefully research the various types of professional drones and with the funding executed a purchase along with other important accessories. After the semester was over, I got in touch with elders and members of the Gun Lake Tribe, which is a Potawatomi Tribe just south of Grand Rapids. From there, I was further connected with a drone instructor/professor from Albion college. I spent the next 6 weeks receiving professional instruction and am pleased to inform you that I am now a commercially licensed drone pilot. In addition to passing this exam, I am now in process of becoming certified with Pix4D mapper, a program that processes orthomosaic 2D maps and 3D models.

After that, I have gained a lot of experience and expertise through all the jobs I have been so grateful to contract.

My Drone

The drone I currently own is DJI’s Mavic Pro 3, which is one of the industry’s leading drones for aerial photography/videography. Its capabilities include but are not limited to 31-minute flight time per battery, 7x optical zoom, omnidirectional obstacle sensing, and 500-meter max altitude (ATC permitted).
